Peony 'Sugar 'n Spice'

Description

Paeonia herbaceous hybrid 'Sugar 'n Spice'.  Extra-large, bowl-shaped flowers have slightly undulating salmon pink petals with a soft cream undertone. The medium sized plant has a spreading habit with strong stems and light green leaves. In early spring this beautiful landscape plant is a real feast for bees and other pollen lovers.

The originator is Allan Rogers, who once told me that he turned to writing books because hybridisation was not his thing. This is the only one I could find registered under his name, but it certainly proves him wrong! Not only is it a strong, healthy growing plant, the flowers are bold and the petals have substance.  One of our favourites, a beauty to behold.

And here is the nursery rhyme dating from the early 19th century that we sing for our plantlets :-).

What are little boys made of?

What are little boys made of?

  Snips, snails

  And puppy-dogs' tails

That's what little boys are made of

What are little girls made of?

What are little girls made of?

  Sugar and spice

And everything nice [or "all things nice"]

That's what little girls are made of

Registered in 1988.
