Peony 'Duchesse de Nemours'

Peony 'Duchesse de Nemours'

Description

Paeonia lactiflora 'Duchesse de Nemours' The outer petals are inverted to form a bowl containing a compact flower with dense petaloids. This free-flowering variety has glossy green leaves and several side buds that extend the flowering period.

This is one of the most widely grown cut flowers in the professional sector and a few flowers will fill a room with its very special perfume.

A plant support is required in the garden due to the slender stems.

Peony Duchesse de Nemours, registered by Jacques Calot in 1856 was named after Duchesse de Nemours Victoire Auguste Françoise Antoinette Julienne Louise de Saxe-Cobourg-Kohary, (1822-1857). She was first cousin to both the Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, the daughter of their uncle, Prince Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg. She was a dear friend of Queen Victoria, which facilitated the forced exile in 1848 of the Orleans to England. The family lived in Claremont House and she died in childbirth of her 4th child at the very young age of 34.
