Description
Paeonia lactiflora 'Marie Lemoine'. Very large fragrant double flower with a hint of crimson on the outer petals. Strong plant with healthy foliage and sturdy stems. Support is recommended. A striking and lovely cut flower. First prize of the public- and VCK judges at the Keukenhof Exhibition 2010. A true classic peony, capable of seducing all the senses, touch, smell and sight.
Marie Louise Lemoine, née Marie Louise Gomieu (1934-1905), married Victor Lemoine after he had set up his nursery near Nancy around 1855. Marie came from his home village of Delme in Lorraine and was a practical person and keen gardener. As Victor had problems with his hands and eyesight, he taught her the precise techniques of cross-breeding flowers. Her work was prolific and successful! Lilacs were the most important genus they worked on, with peonies a close second.
Peony 'Marie Lemoine' was registered in 1869 by Jaques Calot, a fellow nurseryman and breeder.
